New Years Day Meet

We have held a New Years Day meet for members of CTC Chester and N. Wales for many years.

This year we are going back to our origins by meeting at The Bull at Shocklach---the original watering hole for Watson's Wanderers. The pub has a large room where we can all sit together and has lots of safe parking for bikes and cars.

Groups arrive from several directions to arrive at the pub--- we are all booked in at 12 for 12:30.

If the weather is rubbish, cars are an option, but we prefer to arrive on 2 wheels.

Both veggie and non veggie hot pot along with red cabbage and bread & butter is to be provided at 10 per head. I have currently estimated that 25 non veggie and 15 veggie meals are to be required. If any groups feel that this estimate needs to be revised, please let me know as I am to finalise arrangements with the Bull on Monday 16 Dec.

We expect to leave by 2:00pm so we can get home in available daylight.

For those of us in the Chester area, we are to meet at Christleton pond at 10 for 10:30 departure to a coffee stop in Cleopatra's at approx 11am. Please would other groups circulate their own arrangements.

Look forward to meeting up with you all next year.

Llysfasi Hill Climb and Freewheel Competitions
28th September 2019

The weather forecast was grim, and the morning started rather grey and windy. In spite of this many of the riders opted to ride out to the start, with some leaving their best climbing legs on the road on the way out. In the end there was even some sunshine and only a few minutes of very light rain during the event. Click here for a report of the event, and here for a gallery of photos.

Many thanks to Lowri Evans for organising the event and to Mike Cross for presenting the prizes.

An appeal from our Link Editor

We all regularly sing the praises of our Link Editor, Janet Jones, for her superb productions of the Club Magazine, The Link, but... this also depends on the copy she receives for each issue from our members. For the next edition, in addition to articles and any other items of interest, Janet would specifically like to receive photos and comments about the 80th Anniversary rides and lunch at Llanfair DC on 7th September. Please send your memories, appreciations and anecdotes of the day to Janet. All your offerings are welcome.

Deadline for the Winter edition is Friday 22nd November.

Reaseheath College closed cycleway
Important Notice!

The previously permitted cycleway through Reaseheath College Campus was closed on 13th August 2013 to ensure the safeguarding of students, many of whom are under the age of 18. This was to comply with the requirements laid down by Ofsted and the Care Standards Inspectorate. Reaseheath College has welcomed cyclists in the past but is now private property. Some cyclists are still attempting to access a route through the College and are prepared to ignore requests not to trespass. The College is taking a stronger approach with the use of CCTV to deter access to the campus. Please read and take notice of the full letter sent by the College Vice-Principal, Dave Kynaston, to all cycling clubs in the local area.

C&NW CTC Winter Kit New Order

Our new Club Kit has proved to be very popular. So far the Club has placed bulk orders for short and long-sleeved shirts and long-sleeved training jackets from Impsport, giving the Club a highly visible presence on the roads. We are fortunate that these orders were subsidised from Club funds.

We are now able to offer three further subsidised garments from the Club Kit range.

C&NW CTC Short-sleeved Shirts
New Order

Our new Club kit has proved to be very popular. So far we have placed orders for short and long-sleeved shirts, and long-sleeved training jackets, giving the Club a highly visible presence on the roads. We are fortunate that these orders were subsidised from Club funds.

If you missed out on the chance to order a C&NW CTC Short-sleeved Shirt now is your chance to put in an order. The manufacturers have offered us a very short window to put in another order for short-sleeved shirts at a very advantageous bulk order price.

It is important to stress that the sizing is different from the previous shirts, and that people should use the size guide on the Impsport website. We intend to set up orders for other items of kit in the future.

The order is dependent on reaching a minimum order of 10 shirts. Cheques won't be paid into the bank until that number is reached. If it is not reached then the cheques will be destroyed. Items will be distributed at Club rides or Events where possible. There is no extra charge for postage.

Short-sleeved shirt 39.00

Closing date for orders is 27th July 2019.

Could you be the new C&NW CTC Webmaster?

Glennys and John have maintained the Club website for ten years and will be stepping down as Webmaster and Web Editor at the Club's Annual General Meeting (AGM) in November.

They were very pleased when there was a response from their first request for one of our riders to produce a new Club website. Unfortunately, the member concerned has had to withdraw his generous offer to help for personal reasons. The Club Committee are again looking for a volunteer with website skills to fulfil these roles.

If you are interested and would like more information please contact Glennys for further information and any assistance necessary.

Many congratulations to CTC TWO MILLS

Click for bigger image

I can share with you the excellent news that Two Mills won the 'Best Cycling Event' at Cycling UK Volunteer Awards 2019 for our annual Early Season Challenge ride. The photo on the right shows Janet and Andy receiving the award from Jenny Graham, female endurance cyclist and Cycling UK member, who recently broke the 'around the world' record. It was a great shame that some of us travelling from these parts to the ceremony in London (very) early on Saturday morning, missed her inspiring talk due to train issues. That negative aside, can I take this opportunity to thank everyone amongst you who has helped us over the years with the Early Season/Spring 50 – a team effort organising it – and we take great pride that so many of you return to ride the event each year.

Copy needed for 'The Link'

We have a Club magazine that's filled with all sorts of interesting and informative articles, puzzles and technical tips, but that relies solely on our members making a contribution, no matter how small. So get your pens and pencils out and tell all our readers about any trips or adventures you've completed lately – or anything else you think will be of interest to our pedalling members. Let's hear about them in the next edition of The Link.

I am extending my deadline for copy for the next edition to 19th July. That gives you all plenty of time to get your stories/anecdotes over to me at [email protected]. The Summer 2019 edition will hopefully be landing on your doormat by the end of July. Here's hoping the weather improves in the very near future – let's face it, it couldn't get much worse!

We have planned a programme of Events and Activities that we hope you will support with enthusiasm. Click here for more information. Details for each event are being finalised and will be available soon.

Phil and Helen, owners of Cleopatra's Bistro in Holt were delighted to welcome the Mayor of Wrexham Borough Council, Andy Williams, when they were presented with the Café of the Year 2018 Award by Mike Cross, President of Chester and North Wales CTC (C&NW CTC), part of the National Cyclists' Charity Cycling UK. Club members from C&NW CTC voted Cleopatra's their No 1 café for 2018, the fifth time nominations have been held.

Although the day started off cold and very wet, approximately two dozen members, many on bikes, arrived at 11am for the Certificate Presentation. Also in attendance were Phil's mother Cleopatra, after whom the café is named, and his father Douglas. Phil gave a brief speech after receiving the award expressing their delight at receiving the award and thanked Mike, Club members for their votes, and especially the Mayor of Wrexham Borough Council for attending the presentation with his personal assistant. There will undoubtedly be articles in various local publications in the near future. After welcome refreshments, certificate presentation and a photo call, riders left for home in considerably improved weather. Many thanks to Mike Cross for organising the Event.

Café of the Year 2018

The C&NW CTC Awards Committee is pleased to announce that Cleopatra's Bistro in Holt is a clear worthy winner of our C&NW CTC Café of the Year 2018. Net's Café, Ness, and Kingsway Community Café tied for second place. Perhaps next year...!

Arrangements have been made with the proprietor of Cleopatra's for Mike Cross to present the Café of the Year certificate on Tuesday 12th March 2019. The presentation will take place at about 11:30am. It would be great if some C&NW CTC members could ride out to the café for the photo call and presentation (and of course a refreshment stop).

Repairs to Tower Wharf Promenade (boardwalk) alongside the River Dee near Sealand Road in Chester will begin from Monday 10th December. A540 Safety Improvements for Cyclists
Sign this petition Please!!

Our Ch&NW CTC Right to Ride Officer has been petitioning for improvements to the A540 for cyclists for over ten years, where the road has experienced a large number of serious accidents involving cyclists. Highways England spent £540,000 recently on safety improvements to the A540/A550 (Two Mills) junction. A very dangerous section of this high speed road still exists between Puddington Lane and the A540/A550 junction. As part of the improvements undertaken approximately forty years ago a short section of cycle path was installed – but the hazard on this stretch of the A540 remains. This existing 475 metre long path between Puddington Lane and the Highway England new cycle path needs to be repaired and reinstated as a matter of urgency. Time to Vote for Café of the Year 2018 – Reminder

January 15th 2019 is the deadline for you to vote for the 2018 Café of the Year. As five years have elapsed, Tilly's is again eligible for consideration but none of the others.

At last year's Annual General Meeting (C&NW CTC AGM) it was proposed there should also be a 'Pub of the Year' competition. Corwen Summer Audax rides – 14th July 2018

Despite an early morning mist, the day proved to be lovely and warm with little breeze to speak of. The turnout of sixty-six riders was excellent and the day went by without a hitch. There were three rides of varying lengths on offer to challenge riders. The Bala Parade was a shorter and gentler ride in lovely countryside designed as an introduction to Audax riding. The Brenig Bach was a very hilly ride in surprisingly remote countryside, and The Barmouth Boulevard was a long, hard and hilly ride, again crossing remote areas. Returning riders commented on the wonderful scenery and said how much they had enjoyed their rides.

Many thanks to Vicky Payne for organising these very successful, annual rides.

Bert Bailey Memorial Vets 100 – 1st July 2018

We had glorious weather for this event although some may have thought it was too hot for such a distance. The event wasn't so well attended this year for a number of possible reasons, but everyone who took part enjoyed the route, the meals, and refreshments provided at various points along the way. Many of the riders stayed behind to receive their certificates from Mike Cross, President of Chester and North Wales CTC, and to see trophies awarded to the oldest female and male riders who completed the course. Bert Bailey Memorial Vets 100, 1st July 2018: Congratulations to all those who took part in this annual event which lost none of its character in spite of having less than fifty entrants this year. Our own Doreen Lindsey was a worthy winner of the trophy for the oldest lady rider. There cannot be many women capable of riding 100 miles when in their 80s. Well done! Special thanks are due to Organiser Laurie Mason and his team of helpers. Laurie's work over many months ensured this event's continuing success.

Poor behaviour by cyclists – request for information!

The Club has received a notice from Cycling UK National Office concerning seriously unacceptable behaviour by an unknown group of cyclists who passed through Bunbury last Sunday 17th June in the afternoon. The cyclists used the village hall toilets without permission and left them in a dirty condition requiring the assistance of the regular cleaner. The complainant recognised that many groups of cyclists pass through the village, that most are polite, and that identifying those responsible may be difficult. This discourteous and undesirable behaviour has resulted in the village hall booking officials deciding to refuse all future requests from cycling organisations. Such is the damage caused to the many by an irresponsible few. If anyone has any further knowledge of the incident please contact Lowri Evans or Cycling UK National Office. It would be appreciated.

Important Notice – Audax Rides from Willington Hall, Saturday 19th May

"The parking arrangements at Willington Hall have changed this year. Enter through the main entrance from the Kelsall side and continue down the drive past the first left turn into parking bays further down the driveway. Please do not park in the traditional place near the Tarporley direction entrance as this area is required for a wedding party. Registration is in the usual room on the R just beyond reception. A free drink of tea or coffee is provided for each rider. If you would like a bacon butty (£3.95) or banana (80p) then order at reception immediately on the R as you enter the hotel – before registration.

It would be appreciated if the Panorama Prospect riders stayed outside the hotel until 08:05 to enable us to get the 200km riders away smoothly.

We are to operate 'on site' validation of rides at the finish from 15:00. Please look out for us inside the hotel to get your ride signed off – if not obvious then ask at reception. Trust you all have an enjoyable and safe day out."

Chester Easy Riders: On Thursday 26th April, members of Chester Easy Riders celebrated the tenth Anniversary of their Club, known as CER to most! The Club is affiliated to Cycling UK and was founded and managed by Bryan Wade since it began. Bryan was the Honorary Secretary of Chester and North Wales CTC from 2004 to 2007. To show their appreciation, club members arranged a surprise presentation to Bryan of a bicycle sculpture at Ness Gardens café, followed by lunch at the Old Rathbone pub in Frankby. New Chester and North Wales CTC tops

I'm sure we are all waiting in anticipation for our newly-designed Club tops. The design proved to be very popular resulting in an order of 168 being placed with Impsport, specialists in cycling sportswear. The delivery date was estimated to be mid-April but due to an unexpected order for the Commonwealth Games the expected delivery date has been moved to the second week in May. We apologise for the delay. I expect we will still be delighted to receive and wear them when there is a clear improvement in the weather.
